π Galaxies β The Big Cities of Space
π What is a galaxy?
A galaxy is a huge family of:
- Stars β
- Planets πͺ
- Gas and dust βοΈ
- All held together by gravity
π§ Our home is the Milky Way galaxy.
π’ How many galaxies are there?
- In the observable universe, scientists estimate there are
about 2 trillion galaxies π²
(Observable universe = the part we can see with telescopes.)
β How many stars are there?
- A single galaxy can have billions or trillions of stars
- The Milky Way alone has about 100β400 billion stars
π§ Thatβs more stars than grains of sand on many beaches!
πͺ How many planets are there?
- Most stars have planets
- Scientists believe there may be more planets than stars
- That means trillions upon trillions of planets in the universe πππ
π Types of galaxies
1οΈβ£ Spiral galaxies π
- Look like spinning pinwheels
- Have arms that swirl out
- Example: Milky Way
2οΈβ£ Elliptical galaxies π‘
- Shaped like ovals or balls
- Mostly made of old stars
- Very big or very small
3οΈβ£ Irregular galaxies π
- No clear shape
- Often formed after galaxy collisions
π Galaxy sizes
- Some galaxies are small with a few million stars
- Some are giant with trillions of stars
- Galaxies can collide and merge over time
π Fun galaxy facts
- Galaxies move and travel through space
- The Milky Way is moving toward the Andromeda galaxy
- Light from far galaxies takes billions of years to reach us
π§ Easy to remember
Galaxies are giant homes for stars and planets
β Big wonder thought
- With so many galaxies, stars, and planetsβ¦
- Scientists wonder: Is there life elsewhere? π½
