How Crude Oil is Transformed into Useful Fuels

🛢️ How Crude Oil Becomes Petroleum Products

Crude oil is a thick, dark liquid found deep underground. It comes from ancient plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. But crude oil cannot be used directly in cars or planes. It must be refined (cleaned and separated) first.

The place where this happens is called an oil refinery.

1️⃣ Crude oil is brought to a refinery

Oil is taken from underground using oil wells and transported by:

  • 🚢 Ships
  • 🚚 Trucks
  • 🚆 Trains
  • 🛢️ Pipelines

It is then sent to a refinery to be processed.

2️⃣ The oil is heated

At the refinery, crude oil is heated in a huge furnace until it becomes a very hot mixture of liquid and gas.

Temperature can reach about 350–400°C 🔥.

3️⃣ Separation inside a tall tower

The hot oil goes into a tall tower called a fractional distillation column.

This process is called
Fractional Distillation

Inside the tower:

  • Heavy liquids stay at the bottom
  • Lighter gases rise to the top

Different fuels are collected at different levels.

4️⃣ Different petroleum products are collected

From one barrel of crude oil we get many useful products:

Level in towerProductUsed for
TopGas (LPG)Cooking gas
UpperPetrol (Gasoline)Cars and bikes
MiddleKeroseneJet fuel and lamps
LowerDieselTrucks, buses
BottomHeavy oil / BitumenRoads and asphalt

5️⃣ Cleaning and improving the fuels

Some products are further processed to:

  • Remove impurities
  • Improve fuel quality
  • Make plastics and chemicals

🌟 Fun Facts

  • One barrel of crude oil = about 159 liters.
  • Oil refining creates thousands of products including plastics, medicines, and synthetic clothes.
  • Gasoline used in cars is called petrol in many countries.

🧠 Easy Way to Remember

Crude oil becomes useful fuels by:

1️⃣ Heating
2️⃣ Separating in a tall tower
3️⃣ Collecting different fuels

💭 Think about this:
One liquid underground can become fuel for cars, planes, ships, and even materials for plastic toys!
