Why the Sun Appears Yellow from Earth

1️⃣ The Sun is actually white

  • The Sun makes all colors of light.
  • When all colors mix together, they look white.
  • In space, astronauts see the Sun as white, not yellow.

2️⃣ Earth has air around it

  • Earth is wrapped in a blanket of air called the atmosphere.
  • Sunlight must pass through this air before reaching our eyes.

3️⃣ Blue light gets scattered

  • Sunlight has many colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue.
  • The air scatters blue light in all directions.
  • That scattered blue light makes the sky look blue.

4️⃣ The remaining light looks yellow

  • After blue light is scattered away,
  • The light coming straight from the Sun has more yellow and red colors.
  • That’s why the Sun looks yellow to us.

5️⃣ Why Sun looks red in the evening?

  • In the morning and evening, sunlight travels through more air.
  • Even more blue light is scattered.
  • Mostly red light reaches us → red or orange Sun 🌅

🧠 Easy to remember

Sun is white → Air scatters blue → Sun looks yellow

🎨 Fun classroom activity

  • Shine a white flashlight through a glass of water with a little milk.
  • You’ll see the light turn yellowish — just like sunlight in the atmosphere!
