Understanding Atmosphere Layers

1. Troposphere – Our Home Layer

  • Where it is: Closest to Earth.
  • How high: Up to about 12 km (like flying in a plane).
  • What happens here:
    • We live here!
    • All weather happens here: rain, clouds, snow, storms.
  • Fun fact: The higher you go, the colder it gets.

2. Stratosphere – The Ozone Layer

  • Where it is: Above the troposphere, up to 50 km.
  • What happens here:
    • Contains the ozone layer, which protects us from the Sun’s harmful rays.
    • Planes fly in this layer sometimes.
  • Fun fact: This layer keeps us safe from getting too much sunlight.

3. Mesosphere – The Shooting Star Layer

  • Where it is: Above the stratosphere, up to 85 km.
  • What happens here:
    • Meteors (space rocks) burn up here and look like shooting stars!
  • Fun fact: It’s really, really cold here!

4. Thermosphere – The Hot and Glowing Layer

  • Where it is: Above the mesosphere, up to 600 km.
  • What happens here:
    • Space shuttles orbit here.
    • Northern and southern lights (auroras) happen here.
  • Fun fact: Even though it’s called “hot,” it would still feel cold because there’s very little air to carry heat.

5. Exosphere – The Edge of Space

  • Where it is: Farthest from Earth, starts around 600 km and goes into space.
  • What happens here:
    • Satellites orbit Earth here.
    • Air is very thin—almost nothing is left!
