The Origins of Earth’s Water Explained

🌊 Where did the water on Earth come from?

Earth’s water came from two main sources over a very long time.

🌋 1️⃣ Water from inside the Earth

Long ago, when Earth was very hot:

  • Volcanoes erupted often 🌋
  • Hot gases came out of the Earth
  • One of these gases was water vapor

As Earth cooled:

  • Water vapor turned into liquid water
  • It fell as rain for millions of years

This rain filled:

  • Oceans
  • Rivers
  • Lakes

👉 This is called volcanic outgassing.

☄️ 2️⃣ Water from space (asteroids & comets)

Scientists also believe:

  • Asteroids and comets hit early Earth
  • They carried ice
  • When they crashed, the ice melted into water

This added more water to Earth.

🌧️ The Great Rain (early Earth)

  • It rained for thousands to millions of years
  • This is sometimes called Earth’s first rain
  • Over time, oceans slowly formed

🔄 Why doesn’t Earth run out of water?

Because of the water cycle:

Evaporation → Clouds → Rain → Rivers → Oceans

Water keeps moving and recycling.

🌧️ Rain made oceans

🌟 Fun facts for kids

  • About 70% of Earth is covered with water
  • Earth is called the Blue Planet
  • The water you drink today is billions of years old

🎯 One-line summary

Earth’s water came from volcanoes and space rocks long ago.
