Understanding Pangaea: The Supercontinent Explained

🌍 What is Pangaea?

Pangaea was a supercontinent.

👉 A supercontinent means all the continents were joined together as one huge land.

Pangaea existed millions of years ago.

⏳ When did Pangaea exist?

  • About 300 million years ago, Earth had one big continent
  • Around 200 million years ago, it started breaking apart
  • The pieces slowly moved to form the continents we see today

🌊 Why did Pangaea break apart?

Because of moving Earth plates.

  • Earth’s surface is made of huge pieces called tectonic plates
  • These plates move very slowly
  • As they moved, Pangaea cracked and separated

🧠 How do scientists know Pangaea was real?

Scientists found clues:

🧩 1️⃣ Continents fit like a puzzle

  • South America and Africa look like they fit together

🦖 2️⃣ Same fossils on different continents

  • Fossils of the same animals and plants were found far apart

🪨 3️⃣ Same rocks and mountains

  • Matching rock layers on different continents

🌎 What happened after Pangaea?

Pangaea split into two parts:

  • Laurasia (north)
  • Gondwana (south)

These later broke into the 7 continents we know today.

🌟 Fun facts for kids

  • “Pangaea” means “all lands” in Greek
  • Dinosaurs lived when continents were connected
  • Continents are still moving today—about as fast as fingernails grow!

🧠 Easy way to remember

Pangaea = one big land
Plates moved → continents drifted
